Bryant's Legacy Invitational Marks the Start of Marching Season
The Legacy Marching Invitational at Bryant’s field opened this year’s competition season on September 27th. The band room buzzed that morning with a mix of excitement and nerves as students helped each other secure their hair into tight buns and safety‑pin bibbers. Suddenly, the nervous energy shifted into a quiet, determined focus as they loaded props and instruments into the moving trucks. With everything ready, the band headed to their first competition of the season.
Once in Bryant, the campus was alive with activity. Bands warmed up behind the field, their music carrying through a packed parking lot where fans wove between food trucks and vendor stands. We had only driven fifteen minutes, but bands from across the state, some traveling as many as four hours, had come to perform in the already scorching heat. The stands echoed with camaraderie. Everyone was there for the same reason: to support the band.
The performances were splendid. Cows, teacups, and giant daisies graced the field. Then the announcer called out, “The Pride of Benton, The Benton Panther Band.” Their black and gold costumes shone in the sunlight, matching the radiance on their faces. They moved gracefully through their performance. Our fans roared.
After the final note faded, the band shifted from show mode to recovery mode, removing hot costumes, grabbing ice‑cold drinks from our Booster volunteers, and finding small spots of shade to rest and eat.
After lunch, the band returned to the stadium as spectators to cheer for the remaining performances while waiting for their scores.
Finally, hearts pounding, the drum majors were called to the field for the results of their first competition of the season.
