Hard Night at NLR Reveals Quiet Strength
What should have been an ordinary Friday night away game against NLR turned upside down when a shooting outside the stadium resulted in a stray bullet injuring one of our band parents. Thanks to the fast action of first responders, staff and students were quickly moved to safety within the school while the stadium was calmly evacuated.
As always, our directors were a steady, guiding force. Their calm and clear direction ensured that every student was safe and accounted for.
Following their example, our students showed a level of maturity and compassion beyond their years. While some were understandably shaken and afraid, others instinctively stepped up to comfort their friends, help one another reach their families, and remind each other that they were safe.
Back home, families gathered in the school parking lot to wait for the buses, offering encouragement, reassurance, and the grounding that a sense of community provides.
When the students pulled into the school, their normal roar was no more than a somber and reflective hum. They gathered in the familiar room where they spend so many hours, a place where they felt secure and together. In that moment, nothing else mattered.
In the days that followed, the focus stayed on care and connection. Boosters provided meals for the affected family during recovery, and school counselors and administrators made space for any student who needed support and healing, not rumors or fear.
You never think these things can happen where you are, but they can. And it’s in the worst times that we’re reminded that band is more than just a class. It’s a family.
